Zen Chakutsu — Exhibition of Tea Utensils Associated with Myōkian (2026)

We are pleased to announce the upcoming exhibition “Zen Chakutsu — Exhibition of Tea Utensils Associated with Myōkian” at Shop & Gallery Chikubuen.

Located within Myōkian Temple, Tai-an is the oldest surviving small tea room of its kind. Measuring just two tatami mats, this intimate space embodies the spirit and aesthetic ideals of wabi-cha, the style of tea perfected by the tea master Sen no Rikyū. Tai-an is now designated as a National Treasure of Japan.

Takano Chikko’s connection with Myōkian began with our founder, Tadao Takano, whose work and philosophy were deeply influenced by the thoughts of Sen no Rikyū. Since then, we have had the privilege of working with Myōkian, receiving old timber and felled wood generated during restoration projects and giving new life to these materials through the creation of tea utensils.

First launched last year, this exhibition returns with a selection of works that includes a tea-box set by ceramic artist Masako Nakagami; a black bamboo tea scoop within a bamboo case, made from a single piece of bamboo, by Myōkian’s abbot, Shikō Takeda; hanging scrolls featuring calligraphy and paintings with accompanying inscriptions; and a tea caddy crafted from a camellia tree that grew within the grounds of Myōkian by woodworker Goichi Matsumoto. Also on display will be the Tōyama Furo-saki, a hearth screen depicting the distant mountains of Mount Tennōzan in Yamazaki.

We hope this exhibition will offer an opportunity to experience the skills, craftsmanship, and spirit cultivated through our ongoing work in the making of tea utensils.
